Stone floors are for life…

In spite of a few slabs showing deterioration in this Cotswold stone floor, it remains in generally good condition. Some pieces exhibit cracks, filled with cement, and traces of paint and leveling compounds, offering valuable insights into its two centuries of use.

Typically, sections of the stone flooring requiring replacement are situated within well-trodden pathways developed over the years. Cotswold stone floors of this age naturally display signs of heavy wear, with worn trails in high-traffic areas revealing the true historical depth of these remarkable floors.

Restoring Cotswold Stone Floor restoration.

We carefully selected reclaimed Cotswold Stone from a nearby reclamation yard. These Cotswold stone pieces, originated from an old farmhouse, and were chosen for their oversized and reasonably flat characteristics. After cutting them to (making sure we replicated the tight joint look of the original floor) they were used to replace damaged sections.

For the installation, we used lime mortar to set the new stones. This choice aligns with the sand and rubble base of the original floor, promoting breathability and preventing moisture entrapment. It’s crucial to avoid using modern-day mortars, as they can lead to damp issues within room walls.

Upon setting the stones, we meticulously shaped the replacements to match the worn surfaces of the surrounding slabs.

To enhance the durability of the floor, we used lime mortar for repointing the stones. There are various techniques for finishing floors, but in this case, we employed diamond pads to rehone the surface, restoring the distinctive deep honey tones unique to Cotswold stone. Following honing, a water-based sealer was applied, preparing the floor for its next phase of life.

Over time, the floor will naturally develop a patina, further enhancing its character and charm. Positioned for the next 200 years, this meticulously treated Cotswold stone floor is poised to age gracefully, deserving the attention and care it has received.
